For those unaware, credible Dragon Ball reporter Dragon Ball Hype recently posted an image on Twitter of the large tree from Beerus’ home planet in Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot. This almost guarantees that the upcoming DLC will adapt at least the first half of the Gods of the Universe Arc, and it would be somewhat strange if the latter half was not adapted as well. Frieza’s golden form has become something of a fan favorite, so seeing it in action alongside Super Saiyan Blue with Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot’s critically acclaimed engine would be a treat.

Golden Frieza in Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot

If Golden Frieza were to be introduced at all, it would first be as a villain. At the end of the Resurrection F arc when Frieza arrives on planet Earth to kill Goku, his golden form would be the final fight of the arc and possibly the DLC. This would take place after great moments like Goku and Vegeta training with Whis to unlock Super Saiyan Blue, the Z Warriors battling against the new Frieza Force, and would be a very cool climax to the first DLC.

Oddly enough, though, Golden Frieza doesn’t really pose too much of a threat to Goku and Vegeta. Throughout the entire situation, the pair of godly Saiyans can be seen bickering over who gets to fight Frieza first and things like that. To make matters worse for the evil emperor, his golden form drains his energy rapidly and cannot be sustained for long periods of time. It is due to this that Golden Frieza eventually becomes a non threat to the likes of Goku and Vegeta, to the point where Vegeta’s battle with him is largely one sided.

Nevertheless, the boss fight could still be more than compelling if played right. First Goku faces Frieza, with the two of them ramping up to their full power gradually. This would provide opportunity for multiple fights at varying degrees of difficulty. Once the two finally clash at full force, that would be the hardest fight of the arc. Eventually Goku lets his guard down and is defeated by Sorbet’s laser gun, but of course Vegeta steps in. The fight against Golden Frieza as Vegeta would be somewhat easier thanks to Frieza already being worn out, but should still be quite challenging. There’s also the possibility that Goku will fight Frieza again after Whis reverses time.

Will Frieza Be A Playable Character In Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot?

Unfortunately, the odds of Frieza being a playable character in Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot’s first DLC are slim. There would certainly be no instance in which Frieza is playable during the main scenario, but it is possible, albeit unlikely, that he could be made playable during the intermission which follows the final battle of the arc. Even this seems far fetched since Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot made it a point to not allow players to use characters that would not reasonably be there during an intermission. Example of this include how Goku could not be played between the Frieza and Cell Sagas or how Future Trunks couldn’t be used until the end of the game.

That said, the God of Destruction and his angelic attendant will play an important role in the first half of the DLC, and dataminers have already found playable character data for Beerus and Whis in Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot. This could mean that, while they likewise would not be playable during the story, the godly duo might be usable during intermissions and the like. Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot has already shown that they don’t mind breaking the rules a little bit for the sake of player enjoyment by how they allow Future Trunks to be used in the end game.

Should CyberConnect2  decide to continue adapting Dragon Ball Super for Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot, whether as further DLC or as a standalone sequel, then the conversation around playable Frieza changes dramatically. Frieza is brought back for one day by Goku and Fortuneteller Baba so that he can participate in the Tournament of Power. Frieza’s role here is so important, in fact, that it would be a massive disappointment if he wasn’t made playable during this arc. Due to his mental training in Hell, he mastered the golden form as well, removing its time limit.

How Would Golden Form Work?

If Frieza were a playable character, it is most likely that his Golden Form would be handled identically to Super Saiyan, Ultimate Gohan, and True Namekian Fusion. The player would be able to activate the transformation with the two shoulder buttons, and doing so would cause the players’ ki to drain steadily in return for increased damage. Since Super Saiyan 3 caps at a 150% boost, Super Saiyan God would likely provide a 200% increase while Super Saiyan Blue would grant a massive 250% boost. Golden Frieza is thought to be about as strong as SSB Goku, so the same would be true for this form.

All of this is simply speculation, as it is possible that Goku’s arch-nemesis would not even be made playable. If he was, however, it would please many fans of the tyrant. There’s something about getting to play a villain in a game like this which fans got a small taste of when playing Vegeta during the Frieza Saga in the base game that allowing players to take control of Frieza could reignite. The chances may be slim, but they do exist, so fans will have to wait until the Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot DLC comes soon.

Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot is available now for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
